Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer is a Windows service from Microsoft Corporation that enables Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)-based, application-consistent backups and restores of SQL Server databases. It works with VSS-aware backup applications (requestors) to coordinate with SQL Server during snapshot operations, briefly quiescing database I/O and flushing transactions so snapshots are transactionally consistent. The service does not perform backups itself; instead, it exposes SQL Server to the Windows VSS framework, allowing tools such as Windows Server Backup, System Center Data Protection Manager, and many third-party solutions to create fast volume-level snapshots and restore database files reliably without taking databases offline. Installed with SQL Server and running as the SQLWriter service, it is lightweight, can be managed from the Services console, and is not required for everyday SQL Server operation—only when your backup strategy relies on VSS snapshots.
